Solar Powered Home in Tamar Valley

Situated near to the River Tamar, the historical divide between Devon and Cornwall, this customer was committed to being at the forefront of the green revolution.  Investing in solar technologies – Solartwin to heat their vented thermal store, providing solar heated hot water and further reducing grid energy usage with a Solar PV system to power their home.

“This is the second house in which we have installed this system; both had south-facing pitched roofs. The mains water in our first house was very hard so we had a water softener included. This needed filling with salt regularly, but it was worth the effort, and the extra expense. The system had performed perfectly for many years with no maintenance required.

We have saved a lot of money on gas since having these systems. If a sunny day is expected, it is worth being patient and waiting for the water to be heated before resorting to gas or electricity. We also have photovoltaic panels, so the washing machine use is almost free of expense and environmental cost.

We have a remote water temperature sensor in intimate contact with the hot water cylinder, near the top, so we know accurately when to start water usage. We have found that 40 degrees is enough for a shower, 45 degrees for the washing machine and 50 degrees or more for washing up.

I would recommend this type of system to anyone. I would not recommend the alternative indirect systems which cost more, are less thermally efficient and need a main-operated pump.” – Solartwin & PV System residential customer
